What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a psychotherapy which helps us to understand how a situation or event can impact on our thoughts, behaviours, emotions and how we feel physically. When life is difficult to manage, we may resort to particular behaviours which are not conducive to positive mental health. It is then easy to become stuck in a cycle of damaging thoughts, emotions and behaviours. By working collaboratively with the therapist, CBT aims to help break this cycle, reduce negative symptoms and improve mental health and well-being. CBT is an evidence-based, time-limited therapy which provides the client with a “tool box” of mental health strategies and interventions that they can continue to use long after therapy has ended.

 

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an evidenced based 'Talking Therapy' which has been proven to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health difficulties. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends and endorses CBT for the treatment of a number of disorders including; depression, anxiety, OCD, panic, and trauma (PTSD).
